The British Horse Society works tirelessly for every horse and rider throughout the UK. Focussing on horse welfare, horse and rider safety, access and rights of way, training, and providing a voluntary system of approving livery yards and riding schools. British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) is the world's leading anti-vivisection campaigning organisation. The BUAV is dedicated to using all peaceful means possible to end animal experiments, both nationally and internationally. Through public campaigning, hard-hitting undercover investigations, media activities, celebrity support, political lobbying, corporate relationships, legal and scientific expertise and quality educational and information materials, the BUAV spreads its campaign message to as wide and diverse an audience as possible. Celia Hammond Trust provides care and refuge for feral cats and kittens and for those animals which on the basis of age, temperament or appearance would not normally be taken in elsewhere. The organisation strives to: promote the welfare of animals through example and education, provide low cost treatment in their clinics for sick/injured animals, provide low cost neuter/vaccination clinics, operate a rescue service for animals, both domestic and feral in emergency situations, provide long and short-term sanctuary accommodation and re-homing facilities for rescued animals and to investigate complaints of cruelty and neglect and to take appropriate action. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) UK is a government department that aims for sustainable development - defined as: ‘development which enables all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.’ The department recognises that animals are sentient beings - not merely commodities. It follows that the standards of animal welfare they apply are very important. Defra works to ensure that priority is given to standards for welfare of animals.
