The animal charity course is for working in the animal care and welfare sector such as for an animal charity. 

For this type of work, it is essential to have a good understanding of the needs and care requirements for a variety of species.

For this reason, this course contains individual modules with information about the care of dogs, cats, small mammals, rabbits and reptiles.

This is a 12 module course as we believe it is crucial to have a thorough understanding of a variety of other subjects essential for the smooth running of an animal charity. 

This course includes a 1 or 2 week optional practical at an animal welfare charity in Gloucestershire.


Module 1

What is a companion animal? 

Module 1 of this animal charity course investigates the issues surrounding the animal welfare crisis.

Learn all about animal charities: Who are they, what work do they do?


Module 2

Animal Ethics: The moral status of companion animals

This module serves as an introduction to the subject of Animal Ethics and Welfare.


Module 3

Handling & restraint

Learn techniques that will ensure minimum stress for various animals. Humane handling of animals for examinations as well as how best to assist clients and staff with the handling and transportation of animals.


Module 4

Caring for Dogs

Learn about the general health & welfare of dogs including: Routine health checks & common health disorders, common diseases & parasites, handling & restraint, transport, basic grooming and nutrition, environmental enrichment and exercise.

The module includes information about the 5 Freedoms, UK animal welfare legislation and how this relates to canines.


Module 5

Caring for Cats

Learn about the general health & welfare of cats including: Routine health checks & common health disorders, common diseases & parasites, handling & restraint, transport, basic grooming and nutrition, environmental enrichment and exercise.

The module includes information about the 5 Freedoms, UK animal welfare legislation and how this relates to felines.


Module 6

Caring for Small Mammals

Learn about the general health & welfare of small mammals including their natural habitat, dietary needs and environmental enrichment and exercise. 


Module 7

Caring for Reptiles

Learn about the general health & welfare of reptiles including: Routine health checks & common health disorders, common diseases & parasites, handling & restraint, transport, basic grooming and nutrition, environmental enrichment and exercise.

The module includes information about the 5 Freedoms, UK animal welfare legislation and how this relates to reptiles.


Module 8

Caring for Rabbits

Learn about the general health & welfare of rabbits including: Routine health checks & common health disorders, common diseases & parasites, handling & restraint, transport, basic grooming and nutrition, environmental enrichment and exercise.

The module includes information about the 5 Freedoms, UK animal welfare legislation and how this relates to rabbits.


Module 9

Health & hygiene  

Module 9 of this animal charity course is all about health and hygiene in an animal rescue home. Disease and illness prevention is a very important aspect of running an animal shelter. This module is all about how to identify and prevent disease and infections from spreading.


Module 10

First Aid

Learn the principles of first aid for companion animals and how to deal with various emergencies.


Module 11

Environmental Enrichment

Many animals in animal rescue homes experience high levels of stress due to being given up or abandoned and finding themselves in a new environment. This module is all about reducing stress for animals and helping staff and volunteers to prevent, recognise and respond to animal aggression in order to minimise bite risks.


Module 12

Advising clients

Providing sound advice to visitors and adopters is part of everyone's job at an animal charity. This module has comprehensive information about adopting an animal, microchips, the importance of neutering, controlling parasites, vaccinations, nutrition, exercise, grooming, enrichment, lost and found animals and basic information about animal medication.
