Careers with dogs will require dedication and hard work and a genuine interest in the welfare of dogs.

If you haven’t spent time working with or caring for dogs, it is worth considering working as a volunteer before embarking on this type of career.

To enjoy working with dogs, it is important that you understand a dogs’ physical and emotional needs. Dogs are intelligent creatures and need mental and physical stimulation. You will need to be compassionate and genuinely interested in their welfare. Working with dogs is grubby and involves tough physical outdoor work; it is crucial that you enjoy being outdoors in all types of weather as dogs need to be exercised and cared for every day. You will need to be physically fit, hard working, have plenty of stamina and enjoy exercise. If you are working for a boarding kennels, you may be required to live on site.

You will need to be able to recognise when dogs are unwell or unhappy and be able to pay particular attention to detail and to health and safety requirements. Dogs need care 24 hours a day, seven days a week and therefore the working hours are unpredictable and varied and you will probably be required to work at weekends. The risk of being bitten exists in all careers with dogs and it is important to ensure you have sufficient training and that you feel confident around dogs.

Dog GroomerThis career can be very rewarding. Regular grooming can prevent problems such as excessive shedding, painful mats, as well as help identify other problems, for example; sores, fleas lumps, cuts, rashes even bad teeth, that might go unnoticed without the hands on attention.

Kennel Jobs are the starting point for most careers working with dogs.

Dog Trainer most dog trainers are self employed but some animal rescue centres will employ dog trainers and behaviourists to work with the dogs brought into their centres for rehoming.

Dog Walking is becoming an increasingly popular career choice for those who want to work with dogs are physically fit, don't want a desk job and want to work from home.

Dog Handler Before becoming a dog handler, individuals are required to join the organisation where they intend to work. For example, police handlers have to spend two years in ordinary police training before transferring to the dog section.

Dog Home Boarding is a good career choice if you are active, love walking and would like to work from home.

Dog Warden is one of the many names, which include Animal Warden, Dog Control Officer, Animal Welfare Officer, given to a person who works, directly or indirectly, for a Local Authority as result of the 1990 Environmental Protection Act. The act requires for a person from each local authority in the UK to be employed for the collection of stray dogs.

Dog Behaviourists are sometimes called Animal Psychologists, animal behaviourists or Pet Behaviour Counsellors. They diagnose and treat behavioural problems in animals, such as aggression and phobias and work mainly with domestic pets or animals in zoos.

Kennel Managers are employed by private boarding and breeding establishments and charitable organisations to oversee the day to day running of the organisation.

Assistance dog trainers train dogs to help people with sight or hearing difficulties, physical disabilities, and those prone to seizures, to lead independent lives.

Dog transport/pet taxi businesses.This is a growing industry and a rewarding career if you enjoy driving, are happy working flexible hours and would like to run your own pet related business.
