The use of a dog handler to assist in crime prevention is increasing as crime gets more sophisticated. Dogs have many advantages over humans: they can detect human scents from several hundred yards away and are able to search much more restricted areas such as undergrowth. One third of a dog's brain is set aside for scent detection alone. Search dogs are extremely smart - generally they are equivalent to an average five year old child in intelligence. Dogs can understand up to 200 individual verbal commands, whilst the average human uses only 1,000 words during their everyday life There is a lot of competition for this type of work, there are not many positions, and there are usually long waiting lists. You will stand a better chance of employment if you are physically fit, have excellent vision. Although not essential some experience with dogs might help – try volunteering at a local rescue centre or kennels. Dog handling careers include, police dog handler, search and rescue dog trainer, RAF dog handler, security dog handler and more.
