Horse and Pony Protection Association (HAPPA) is one of the oldest and most respected equine welfare charities. Founded in 1937 to help fight against the transportation of large horses to the continent for slaughter, HAPPA continues to play a major role in all aspects of equine welfare. Volunteer assistance required.

Horse World, (Friends of Bristol Horses Society) was formed by volunteers in 1952 to care for unwanted horses and ponies from agricultural and industrial backgrounds, such as farming and the coal mines. Many of these animals still had several years of life left, and the organisation saved as many as possible from unnecessary slaughter. Today the charity has evolved into a respected equine organisation, concentrating on rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing horses, ponies and donkeys in need. Jobs are advertised as they arise.

The Home for Unwanted and Lost Animals (HULA) operates from a 17 acre site which provides sanctuary for animals including horses and donkeys. Volunteers required to assist.

The International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) operates internationally as one of the world’s leading equine welfare charities working to improve the lives of many horses. Their political campaigners, international training teams, UK Field Officers and Rehabilitation Centres are all working towards a world where the horse is used but never abused. Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary is located in Oxfordshire. The organisation is a registered charity which cares for and protects abused and ill-treated donkeys and other animals. Volunteer assistance required.

The Mare & Foal Sanctuary, Devon was established in 1988 and has rescued hundreds of horses throughout the UK and successfully re-homed them in safe, knowledgeable and loving homes. They are asking for voluntary help in their stables; with the mucking out, grooming and general welfare of the horses.

The Margaret Green Foundation Trust (MGFT) specialises in animal care for all types of animals including horses. With so many animals in need of care, their three sanctuaries are always busy, finding loving homes for our animal friends, welcoming new animals and looking after the permanent residents in their care. Volunteers are essential to their work.

Mossburn Animal Centre, Scotland was originally set up in 1987 to provide help for misused, abused, unwanted and neglected horses and ponies. They depend on voluntary assistance.
