Details of UK Universities that offer veterinary degree courses: The Veterinary Gateway Course this is a one year preparatory course for those who do not have the necessary qualifications to apply for the veterinary degree course. The course is an initiative by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London, supported by the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool. It’s designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills you need to join a career-building veterinary degree course, either at the RVC or at Liverpool. BVSc, Bristol University School of Veterinary Science The majority of teaching during the first three years of study is held in Bristol, although during this period you will spend one day a week at the Clinical Veterinary School at Langford. Pre-clinical teaching in Bristol takes place in the School of Veterinary Science, the School of Medical Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences. The aim of pre-clinical study is to provide a firm basic knowledge of the normal structure and function of the animal body. Following from this you will undertake studies of disease and its treatment. Throughout this period you will also study animal management, production and husbandry, with the emphasis being placed on how these contribute to the health and welfare of animals. BVM&S, University of Edinburgh Studying Veterinary Medicine at Edinburgh will give you transferable skills such as effective communication, teambuilding and an understanding of business management. Veterinary training also provides an outstanding background for those who wish to pursue a career in biomedical research, which includes both veterinary and human medicine. BVMS, University of Glasgow Faculty of Veterinary Medicine The University of Glasgow Veterinary School is one of only four Veterinary Schools in Europe currently approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Glasgow graduates are not required to sit the lengthy and costly Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE) which is an examination for international veterinary graduates wishing to pursue licensure in the United States or Canada, and who have not yet graduated from a veterinary school accredited or approved by the AVMA. BVSc, Liverpool University faculty of veterinary science This degree enables you to acquire the professional skills, knowledge and experience in order to qualify as a Veterinary Surgeon. The first three years of the programme are taught in Liverpool. Subjects in the first three years are modularised and cover preclinical and para-clinical subjects. The fourth and final years are spent at Leahurst, where you will receive most of your clinical training. BVetMed, The Royal Veterinary College, University of London A five year undergraduate degree programme, the BVetMed is designed to educate the very best veterinary surgeons of tomorrow. As well as learning the latest theory and practice, you can expect plenty of practical ‘hands on’ experience, taught by leading experts in their field. As the UK’s only independent veterinary school, they have an established reputation for developing innovative approaches to learning. BVetMed, Graduate Accelerated Programme, The Royal Veterinary College, University of London is for students with an undergraduate biological science degree who would like to use it as the basis for a degree in veterinary medicine. The course lasts four years and leads to registration as a veterinary surgeon. BVetMed, Cambridge Veterinary School The Veterinary Medicine course lasts for a total of 6 years. Note: if you already have a degree in a suitable subject, you may gain exemption from one or more years of study based on your previous qualifications. BSC (Hons) in Veterinary Science, The Royal Veterinary College, University of London Holders of veterinary degrees occupy prominent positions in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, as well as specialised practice, using sophisticated computer models and recording systems to monitor herd health and assess disease risks at the level of individual herds and flocks, and the nation as a whole. BSC (Hons) Veterinary Pathology, The Royal Veterinary College, University of London Pathology, as the science of disease, is central to the understanding and conduct of veterinary research and clinical medicine and surgery. Whereas the veterinary undergraduate course provides adequate pathologic information to support subsequent clinical studies, the intercalated degree is a less structured and more student-centred approach to stimulate individual curiosity at the boundaries of pathology research. This is achieved through a series of dedicated lectures, small group seminars and the development of a personal research project. MSc & PG Diploma Livestock Health and Production, University of London designed for the practising veterinarian or animal health specialist who wants to explore broad livestock issues at postgraduate level.
