Centre for Education, Research and Conservation of Primates and Nature (CERCOPAN) is a non-profit, non-government organisation based in Cross River State, Nigeria. CERCOPAN has established an international research and education centre for the study of non-human primates, biodiversity research, forest management and conservation in Cross River State’s tropical rainforest north of Calabar. CERCOPAN accepts both long term supported volunteers, and short term volunteers who are self supporting (3 months or less). Apart from animal husbandry and wildlife rehabilitation, volunteers can assist with environmental education, fundraising, veterinary nursing, biology, engineering, mechanics, and building, welding, and construction. Harnas Wildlife Foundation, Namibia was previously a family run cattle farm - today it is a charitable organisation dedicated to save endangered wild animals in Namibia. Harnas aims to establish a game reserve for orphaned wild animals. Harnas also aims to assist the local Bushman tribes who are in desperate need of medical/health care assistance. Volunteers are called “working guests” and there is further information and application form on their website. The East African Wildlife Society (EAWLS) works to promote conservation and the wise use of wildlife and the environment in East Africa. In order to achieve this mission, EAWLS has been proactive in advocacy, facilitation of conservation education, promotion of conservation activities and the facilitation of field projects. The Society has a volunteer scheme designed to provide graduates with an opportunity to develop their experience and skills in conservation activities. Support and advice is given in developing skills useful to further employment within the field of conservation and environment protection. Volunteers work to a defined job description and work plan. Monde Animal en Passion (MAEP) fights against wild and companion animal suffering in the Côte d’Ivoire region. MAEP runs petitions, media awareness, education, etc to assist animals at risk. They request that volunteers become members of MAEP first. Kitten Action, South Africa is a project of the animal rights group, Justice for Animals. Kitten Action was launched in 1997 to rescue abandoned and unwanted kittens. Since their inception, they have rescued over two thousand kittens. They operate a spay and return policy and have a sanctuary which cares for 40 adults and 60 kittens. Volunteers are asked to assist with their fostering programme. The Highveld Horse Care Unit South Africa is the largest equine welfare organisation in the Southern hemisphere. They have an Inspectorate team who deal with the problems of illegal slaughter, security horses, bush racing and general complaints. Volunteers are required to assist with fundraising and with some horse care duties on weekends. SPCA Centurion, South Africa assists over 5,000 animals every year.
