Animal Rescue Society, Cape Town, South Africa is a companion animal rescue
organisation located near Cape Town. Their goal is to provide animal health care and
sterilisation to the local impoverished communities along with running an adoption
program for abandoned stray animals. Volunteer work here takes on many roles from feeding and caring for the many animals to working closely with staff as they go out into the local informal settlements to collect, return and vaccinate animals. There is also the opportunity to work along side the resident vet, who requires assistance daily. This work is not for the faint hearted, contact directly to assist with animal jobs volunteering.

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe is a haven for wild animals which have little hope for survival in the wild – creatures which have been orphaned, abandoned, injured, born in captivity or brought up unsuccessfully as pets. It is often the last refuge for those brought in sick or injured, and increasingly it is a sanctuary for confiscated animals. Chipangali has been featured in countless documentaries and is now world renowned for it’s pioneering work and is famed as one of Africa’s largest and most successful wildlife rehabilitation/release centres. Volunteers are requested to commit to a minimum four week placement; three weeks will be spent at the orphanage itself and one week at either Hwange or Matopos National Park where they conduct leopard and cheetah research. A week is spent working on each of the orphanage’s three major sections (carnivores, black rhinos and primates). Volunteers may be given the task of helping to hand rear any orphans brought into Chipangali and monitoring any sick and injured animal in the nursery.

Monkeyland, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa this unique primate sanctuary is currently the top eco-tourism attraction on the Garden Route. Monkeyland has captured the hearts of visitors in its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. The sanctuary cares for several species of primates who are not caged. Animal jobs volunteer opportunities are numerous.

The Wolf Sanctuary, Tsitsikamma, South Africa supports the survival of the wolf around the world by providing a sanctuary and natural habitat for wolves and emphasising the importance of not removing animals from their natural domain. Work experience with horses in the African bush volunteers assist a game farm at the foot of the Northern Drakensburg Mountains to the West of the world famous Kruger National Park. Volunteers split their stay between caring for the horses and assisting with conservation and bush work on the game farm. This project offers a great opportunity to gain experience in horse riding and equine management in wonderful surroundings. In addition to the work with horses you will also be introduced to South African wildlife through a series of lectures and activities such as animal identification, tracking and game drives. This is an educational programme and aims to give you an all inclusive introduction to the African Bush as well as living and working with horses. The
project caters for experience and novice riders.
