SanWild is based in South Africa and it’s objectives are a combination of acquiring habitat and saving individual wild animals in need of help. All land acquired through fundraising efforts fall under the auspices of the SanWild Wildlife Trust and are protected
in perpetuity. Their goal is to establish a 15 000 hectare sanctuary and the vision is to ultimately incorporate adjoining farmlands to form an ecologically viable wildlife reserve to protect a unique wilderness area. APES is based in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa and aims to treat and assist all forms of wildlife or companion animals that are sick, injured or orphaned. Any sick or injured wild animal that recovers is returned to its natural habitat within the shortest time possible. Any domestic animal that has been assisted is returned to the owner without charge, or though a donation. Those animals who do not recover enough to be released are homed in the best way as to allow them as natural life as is possible, avoiding zoo type environments. APES is a unique destination for volunteers, back-packers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking enviro-experience and eco-tourism opportunities in Southern Africa. Volunteers gain hands-on animal jobs experience within a working primate sanctuary & rehabilitation centre and also have the opportunity to broaden their experience by visiting a host of associated animal welfare centres in the region. Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) works in deprived areas of South Africa to assist animals and educate their owners. During the clinic our volunteers and a veterinarian tend to approximately 200 animals. CLAW depends on it’s volunteers and say they need people who are sympathetic to their cause and who want to make a stand against animal cruelty and neglect. FreeMe is a rehabilitation centre for indigenous wildlife, based in the north of Johannesburg. FreeMe aims to rescue, rehabilitate and release indigenous wildlife onto carefully chosen reserves and conservancies. FreeMe strives to promote a responsible attitude to wildlife and the environment through education programmes, newsletters, publicity and advice. Volunteers continuously learn new skills and knowledge through contact with similar organisations and experts in the field. Almost all of the work at FreeMe is done by volunteers, ranging from feeding, cleaning and nursing patients in the clinic to raising funds, fixing plumbing, building cages ... whatever your talent, FreeMe can use it! Osienala (Friends of Lake Victoria) works to provide interventions in environmental management around the Lake Victoria region. Over time, and out of necessity, the role of the organisation has expanded to embrace broader social and economic issues in wider context of the Living Lakes principles and objectives. They aim to empower Lake Victoria communities to become key participants in the management and equitable utilization of resources for sustainable livelihoods through capacity building, research, policy advocacy, reduction, information dissemination and networking.
