This is a 2 week practical  placement with a unique Elephant Sanctuary that works hard to improve the lives of captive elephants. This is the only sanctuary of it's kind in Sri Lanka!

This is a great opportunity to gain experience and an insight into the lives of Sri Lankan captive elephants who are not being used for working nor riding.

We recommend this placement as an add on to our Wildlife and Conservation courses, particularly the Elephant Care, Behaviour and Welfare Diploma course

Volunteer with Elephants

You will help with the daily care of the elephants and will be required to assist with their walks, feeding, cleaning and bathing.

Volunteer With Elephants and Get Involved with the Following:

Feeding: Assist with food preparation and feeding of the elephant(s).

Elephant exercise: Attend the elephant walks with the elephant keeper

Elephant care: Clean the elephant enclosure plus a variety of tasks concerned with elephant care.

Sri Lankan cooking: Cook together and learn how to create delicious Sri Lankan food.

No riding and no tricks! Unlike many other organisations this sanctuary does NOT allow elephant riding. This placement to volunteer with elephants is unique as most of the existing elephant volunteering projects in Sri Lanka are elephant riding places where paying tourists come to experience an elephant ride.  This results in suffering for the elephants as they are made to undergo extensive training at a very young age before they accept people riding them. The training of an elephant is a very painful ordeal for them, including sleep deprivation, starvation, dehydration, confinement and pain.

The project is near Kegalle - between Kandy and Colombo - approximately 2 hours from the airport.
