The Zoo Animal Nutrition Course is relevant for anyone working or volunteering with Zoo or Safari Park Animals.
The nutrition of zoo animals is critical to maintaining physical, physiological and mental health.
This course explores the general principles and practical elements of feeding captive herbivores, omnivores and carnivores.
Learn about the range of impacts that poor nutrition can have on the health and welfare of animals in captivity and about the legislation and governing body guidelines of feeding zoo animals. Learn how research and technology has led to the improvement of zoo nutrition.
The course also examines how to make the feeding routine more enriching for captive herbivores, omnivores and carnivores.
History of and Progress in the Nutrition of Zoo Animals
This module serves as an introduction to zoo animal nutrition and explores the importance of nutrition, relationships between nutrition and welfare, natural diets and natural methods of feeding (enrichment).
Learn about the history of feeding large animals and some common misconceptions of nutritional needs. Explore how zoo nutrition may evolve in the future.
The Nutrition of Herbivores
Learn about the general principles of feeding herbivores in captivity. Gain an understanding about the evolution and taxonomy of herbivores and how this impacts their dietary needs.
This module also explores common nutritional diseases and ailments of herbivores in captivity.
