In Defense of Animals Africa (IDA) is making a difference for orphaned chimpanzees and waging a strong campaign against the illegal killing of Cameroon's great apes. In the rainforests of Cameroon, the number of wild, free-living chimpanzees is dwindling at an alarming rate. The slaughtered chimpanzees are not the only victims of the illegal trade in bushmeat. The orphans – infants, juveniles and adults – are victims as well. Visits to remote jungle villages and urban markets often include the sight of dejected orphans listlessly pining for their dead mothers. Visitors to roadside zoos and resort hotels are often shocked at the sight of adult chimpanzees – the grown-up orphans – tethered to the ground by short, heavy chains, or caged behind bars for a lifetime. IDA needs volunteers to assist for six months or more at their Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center located on the edge of the forest near a remote village in Cameroon to assist with animal jobs. Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) has 19 veterinary centres and 20 mobile clinics and treats over 370,000 animals each year throughout North and West Africa and the Middle East. Efforts are concentrated wherever animals are mistreated, neglected or struggling to survive without proper care. SPANA also works in remote desert communities, where qualified vets are few and far between and offers a longer-term solution to improving the health and welfare of working animals. SPANA responds immediately to crises, such as when a natural disaster strikes or at a time of civil unrest or war. Their emergency programmes dispatch help whenever and wherever animals are in distress. SPANA has animal job volunteer opportunities in the African countries where they operate. Society for the Protection of Animal rights in Egypt (SPARE) founded in 2001, is the first animal welfare organization in Egypt to address the situation of all animals. SPARE has grown to include 60 dog kennels, a cat shelter for 25 cats, a donkey sanctuary & day clinic, a dedicated clinic for spay and neuter operations, and plans are underway for a donkey mobile clinic. SPARE also developed as an animal advocacy organisation, and now its members work on issues related to animal welfare in all of Egypt, including: fighting to improve conditions at the Cairo zoo, working to stop the growing “private zoos” that are the latest fashion in Egypt, campaigning to get the government to stop poisoning and shooting animals, lobbying for new Animal Protection Law, exposing the conditions in the Egyptian slaughterhouses and pressuring the government to improve the standards, educating the public on animal kindness and specifically on the need to spay and neuter companion animals.
