All of the organisations below offer voluntary placements and occasionally also advertise animal jobs. Volunteering is one of the best ways of gaining hands on work experience and training and may lead to an offer of full time employment with an organisation.

There are many animal welfare/conservation organisations in New Zealand, however, below are some suggestions in order to assist you to find the right organisation to work for or assist as a volunteer. Animal Rights Legal Advocacy Network (ARLAN) is a volunteer based national network of lawyers and law students interested in improving New Zealand's law as it relates to animals, and working to protect and promote the rights and welfare of animals. Become a member to volunteer.

Birdlands Habitat Trust covers is a rare area that represents an ecological island of native flora and fauna.Their intention is to promote this rare and distinct ecosystem with extensive new plantings of native trees, thus extending the habitat and food sources for all native birds. Cats Protection League Wellington is a purely voluntary New Zealand charity devoted solely to the welfare of cats. Their objectives are: to rescue stray and unwanted cats and kittens, rehabilitate and rehome them where possible, to inform the public on the care of cats and kittens and to encourage the neutering of all cats. The organisation requires voluntary help with cat trapping, fostering, transport, fundraising, etc

Greymouth Branch of the RNZSPCA RNZSPCA stands for the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It is a voluntary organisation which, through its district branches, provides help to animals and owners 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The organisation requires volunteers to assist in a variety of ways.

The International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) (NZ) was founded to prevent the ill treatment of horses exported to Europe for slaughter. It has grown to become one of the world's leading international equine welfare charities. ILPH was established in New Zealand in 1990 to act as an equine lobby group and equine welfare watchdog. Volunteers assist with fundraising etc.

Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE) continues to be at the forefront of exposing animal abuse within New Zealand and around the globe. Public awareness campaigns and political lobbying are the main means used to help expose and question the use of animals in cruel and needless experiments. Global Volunteer Network The aim of New Zealand program is twofold; first they provide volunteer assistance to conservation groups and conservation projects within New Zealand. In return they offer volunteers a unique and diverse experience that will expose them to many aspects of NZ conservation. Volunteers form an integral part of habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring and environmental/conservation research projects. More information available on their website.
