This Canine Care Behaviour and Welfare Qualification, Level 3  is a progression from the Level 2 Award in Canine Care and Welfare

This Ofqual regulated qualification is suitable for anyone working in kennels, rescue, handling or transportation, dog walking or dog sitting will find this a vital qualification. It is also a useful qualification for those planning a career as an animal welfare officer.

Attainment of this Canine Care Behaviour and Welfare Qualification at Level 3 enables business owners to meet the Higher Standard for licensing.

We encourage students to carry out work experience either in employment or on a voluntary basis at a suitable location, in order to gain valuable practical experience whilst studying this online theory-based course.

Unit Summary (370 GLH)

Unit 1

Canine Law

Covers the implications of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006 as well as new legislation coming into force in October 2018. Learners will explore legislation surrounding dogs and how the laws can impact dog ownership and care.

Unit 2

Canine Evolution

Covers the role of evolution and the origin of canis familiaris, gaining an understanding of natural canine social behaviour and breed traits.  We also take a look at the meaning of ethology. Learners will understand how evolution contributes to domestic canine behaviour.

Unit 3

Canine Handling and Transportation

A look at force-free handling and transportation, including force-free equipment along with PPE for working with stray and kennelled dogs.

Unit 4

Canine Learning Theories

Learners will understand the harmful effects of the outdated dominance theory and recognise how to use learning theory in order to train dogs in a force-free manner

Unit 5

Canine Behaviour

Canine body language and common signs of stress and aggression and how stress can escalate into aggression.  Learners will gain an understanding of the body language signs and signals, unwanted behaviour that may arise and the signs of stress and aggression.

Unit 6

Canine Care

Emergency first aid is covered in this unit, along with grooming techniques, stages of development in puppies, the whelping process and how to care for them. Learners will gain an understanding of how to care for the different life stages including first aid, grooming, keeping canines as pets in the community and caring for puppies.

Unit 7

Care of Canines in Kennels & Dog Day Care/Dog Boarding

Causes of disease transmission and prevention, appropriate welfare measures of kennels, dog daycare and dog boarding environments.  Safe entry and exit management, essential PPE and the importance of environmental stimulation in kennels, dog daycare and dog boarding environments.  Learners will understand basic health and welfare issues for kennels, dog day care and dog boarding establishments and how to ensure all canine needs are met.

 

Animal Activity Licensing Regulations 2018 OFQUAL

Do you own or work in Dog Kennels, Boarding Cattery, Dog Day Care, Dog Boarding or Pet Shop?

Defra has recently introduced a significant change with the Animal Activity Licensing Regulations 2018.  This new legislation applies as from 1st October 2018 to the following: Dog Boarding Kennels, Boarding Cats, Day Care for Dogs, Home Boarding Dogs, Dog Breeding and Selling Animals as Pets:

Licensing will require clear evidence of knowledge and experience or a minimum of an Ofqual regulated level 2 qualification in a relevant subject. The new regulations take effect on renewal or if your business is being brought into the scope of licensing for the first time.

Or, to meet the Higher Standard, a member of staff with a relevant Ofqual regulated Level 3 qualification must be present during the working day.

The Ofqual approved Level 2 Award in Canine Care and Behaviour meets the new Animal Activity Licensing Regulation requirements for the basic standard requirements.

The Ofqual approved Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare meets the new Animal Activity Licensing Regulation requirements for the more advanced standard requirements and includes the care of dogs in kennels.

The Ofqual approved Level 3 Diploma in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare meets the Higher Standard Animal Activity Licensing Regulation requirements.

The Ofqual approved Level 4 Diploma in Canine Behaviour and Training Management is a regulated qualification that meets the Higher Standard Animal Activity Licensing Regulation requirements. Students who have previously studied at Level 3 can enrol directly on this qualification.

The Ofqual approved Level 3 Diploma in Feline Care, Behaviour and Welfare meets the Higher Standard Animal Activity Licensing Regulation requirements for Boarding Catteries.

The Ofqual approved Level 3 Animal Welfare Officer Diploma  – relevant for those responsible for inspecting and licensing animal activities businesses.
