In order to ensure a horse is kept happy and healthy the basic needs of every horse should be met by ensuring the following:

  • A suitable environment is provided for the horse to live in. An appropriate diet is provided for the horse, including access to fresh water.
  • The horse is allowed to exhibit natural behaviour.
  • The horse has appropriate companionship. The horse is protected from pain, suffering and injury and disease.
  • More often than not welfare issues arise through ignorance rather than purposeful neglect or abuse of a horse.
  • As such, the education of owners, handlers and riders is of paramount importance in the welfare of horses.
  • The more people can understand the horse’s true nature as a wild animal the better they will be able to understand their role and responsibilities in
  • keeping a horse in a domesticated environment.

This equine course explores the care, welfare and health of horses as well as equine behaviour, grooming, transportation, handling and nutrition.

Unit 1

Equine Welfare & Health

Learn all about the importance of regular health checks. This unit includes information about common diseases, parasites and health disorders that affect horses.

Unit 2

Anatomy and physiology of horses

Gain an understanding of the basic anatomy and function of horse. Learn about the musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, urinary, reproductive, nervous, lymphatic and integumentary systems of the horse.

Unit 3

Equine psychology and dealing with problem behaviour

Learn about the instinctive behaviour of the horse, the factors affecting behaviour, and how horses communicate.

Gain an understanding about problem behaviour; what it is, common causes, strategies to deal with it and preventing it.

Unit 4

Equine nutrition

This unit explores horse nutrition including how to ensure that horses receive the right foods and the correct quantities.

Unit 5

Grooming, Exercise and Environmental Enrichment

Exercise is vital for horses and an important aspect of environmental enrichment.

Unit 6

Handling & restraint and the transportation of horses
